Social Skills Playgroup for Elementary Schoolers on the Autism Spectrum
Youngsters with an autism spectrum disorder often need a little extra guidance to develop age appropriate ability to manage emotions, initiate activities, and form friendships with their peers. A therapeutic playgroup provides a safe space for learning new skills, trying them out, and forming friendships with others who have similar challenges. Through structured activities and creative play, children who participate will learn:
-
The “hidden rules” of common social situations
-
Better skills for managing social anxiety
-
How to maintain their own boundaries, and respect those of others
-
How to handle setbacks and disappointments
-
Improved self-esteem
